Tram Cops are a jangly pop group from Melbourne, who first appeared in June with their marvellous self-titled EP. Now behold “bb Jesus”, their first single since that release. Trippy rock n’roll that gives a fine descriptive impression of the psychedelic experience, real or imagined.
This group features members from the disbanded melancholy dream pop of Laurence, whose Happy Town EP was for me a major highlight of 2015. The title track also appears on the Tram Cops EP. It’s a heartbreaker. Beautiful and measured.
Another highlight of the debut is Dan Bilzerian. While Laurence was minimal and pastoral, Tram Cops might be compared to the rolling freak-outs of Kurt Vile, or the ingenious pop of local contemporaries Crepes.
The vocals, lyrical content and Blank Realm-style soft to loud dynamics make them worth a damn. There’s also a humour to their music that keeps the listener off balance. I find them super interesting.
