Introducing Baby.Face.Thrilla!

Babyface Thrilla

I’ve started a music blog revolving around a broad spectrum of hip-hop, dirty south, sale crate finds, r&b, female and gay rap, underground hip-hop and old school classic recommendations that are nowhere near as schizophrenic as the following list;
You can like Baby.Face.Thrilla on Facebook to get in the loop and listen to the GRAVEDIGGER MIX.

– Nellie XII

1. SpaceGhostPurrp – No Evidence

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RseW0jFCmNM

There is something terrifying about driving (a little bit lost) with a heavy set of dusk fog settling in to obscure the view ahead, around a sparsely populated island in the south of Japan during the off-season and listening to this song. I highly recommend if one ever gets the chance.

2. Angelo Badalamenti – Twin Peaks Theme Song

This is just beautiful. Angelo Badalamenti on writing the Twin Peaks theme song with David Lynch. There is something to be said for soap opera themes.

3. Digable Planets – Where I’m From

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl-pjb7y3y0

Digable Planets are a very special group to me of late, Ishmael “Butterfly” is a gooey cosmic hug and “Ladybug” Mecca beautiful illustration of the appreciation and respect for women in early conscious hip-hop.

4. Marvin Gaye – What’s Goin On?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f39Zs0gB87c

I hope to one day walk into the UN / G8 Summit / NWO giant lizard meeting and play this to them, inevitably they will all melt and world peace will ensue.

5. Faithless – Insomnia (Original)

I’m a firm believer in contact highs and when I hear this I get the residual ecstasy from the Dutch boy in the front row of Pinkpop ’97. Same goes for; Die Antwoord – Never Le Nkemise 2.

6. Bruce Springsteen – I’m on Fire

This song makes me emotional. I imagine even the beefiest men would crumble in his muscly working class arms, tears dripping down making tiny rivers in the coal dust on his skin.

7. MIA – Bad Girls

This is where contemporary pop culture should logically be, interesting, insightful, powerful and unashamed. I’m listing this one just as much for the video as the song, which features women wearing the niqab drag racing and a plethora of impressive stunt drivers performing incredible auto-acrobatics that become even more striking when put in the context that women driving is a strictly prohibited act in Saudi Arabia. Notable staunch girl tune; Lady G – Nuff Respect.

8. Billie Holiday – Strange Fruit

I’m not going to pretend I’ll ever be able to appreciate this as much as some one from this time and place who lived it or is still living it through the generations, but I can recognize its power. One of the first anti-racism songs by the revered Billie Holiday.

9. Willie Hutch – I Choose You

This is what a love song sounds like. Notable sampling; UGK – International Player’s Anthem.

10. Aaliyah – Rock the Boat

Sexy production 101 paired with one of the sexiest voices to ever grace Earth. Notable fan made Second Life video.
