I’ve just watched all eight episodes of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency on Netflix. It’s the best new show I’ve seen since binge watching Community, having not seen much of that show when it originally aired.
At first, it popped up top of screen as a new addition, starring Elijah ‘Frodo Baggins’ Wood. Cool, I’m in.
Then I discover that it’s based on novels by Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and one of my all time favourite humans ever to do this living thing.
Now I’m all in.
First episode, we see Elijah Wood’s character Todd dragging his feet through a humdrum existence as a hotel bellhop, asking his boss for an advance on his paycheck.
Some hotel guests in the top floor penthouse have left the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on their room for a few days, so Todd is sent to check it out. The elevator doors open … and he sees HIMSELF wearing a strange white fur coat, shouting at someone down a corridor.
All very creepy. Todd and a pan-dimensional/time travelling/clone? version of himself make eye contact. Never ideal. We’ve all been there, right?
Then it turns out there’s been a bunch of murdering going on in the penthouse. Bodies strewn about. Bite marks on the ceiling? Todd is fired by his boss.
He gets home to find a strange yellow-coat-wearing man named Dirk Gently climbing into his apartment window, announcing that he’s a detective and Todd is going to help him on the case.
So begins a wild, wild ride through extreme coincidences, inter-connectedness, perhaps a dash of psychic powers, mysterious machines and creepy, dangerous and strange characters.
It’s also funny and dark as hell. I loved this damn show. Catch it on Netflix.
